ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? The Task Decides, Not the Model
Which AI is the best? My honest answer: for most freelancer tasks, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini differ very little. The question that matters comes first: What are you actually trying to solve? Sometimes the answer isn't a chatbot at all.
The short version
- The three keep taking turns at the top. For writing, summaries and ideas, each of them gives you usable results.
- The task comes first: pure automation, a small script, an AI automation or a chat assistant?
- Which model you pick comes down to a few hard facts: your tools, your data, your team.
- All three let you turn off the use of your chats for model training.
Task first, then the tool
Before we talk about models, I look at what you do and what keeps repeating in your work. That shows which of four paths fits:
Pure automation
When the same thing happens every time: moving data from A to B, creating an invoice, sending a reminder. Automation tools like n8n handle this, and it often doesn't need AI at all.
A small script
When a task is always the same but doesn't need a big system. With Kamil, for example, I built scripts that automatically handle recurring steps in After Effects. According to his Google review (translated from German), he saves at least 15% of his time per project with them. An AI can often write scripts like these for you today.
An AI automation
When a process has to understand or write something at one point: sort an incoming request, prepare a draft reply. The AI is then one building block in the process, not the whole process.
A chat assistant
When you think, write and revise: proposals, concepts, follow-ups. Here you work directly with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, ideally with fixed instructions instead of a new prompt every time.
So the question of which model to use only really comes up on the fourth path, and partly on the third. On the first two, it hardly matters.
In practice, it is often a mix. The wedding photographer Euripidis (case study in German) built four websites, a system for invoices and bookings, and a Google Ads setup in about two weeks through my coaching. Claude was his main tool, and a small Python script handled the invoices. He built everything himself.
Why the model usually comes second
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini keep overtaking each other. Whoever leads today may not lead in a few months. For typical freelancer tasks, meaning writing, summaries, ideas and structure, all three give you usable results. The difference usually comes from your instructions.
So build your workflows in a way that lets you swap the model: your instructions, examples and review steps belong to you, not to the tool.
The hard facts that decide the choice
Which tools do you already use?
All three connect to programs that many freelancers use every day, but in different ways:
- Gemini is built into Gmail, Docs and Sheets, depending on your Google Workspace plan (see Google's AI tools for business). You work right in your inbox or in the document itself.
- Claude connects to Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive through connectors. According to Anthropic, they are available for all users.
- ChatGPT pulls in content through connected apps, such as Google Drive or Slack. According to OpenAI, what is available depends on your plan and region, among other things.
Before you subscribe, check that the tool connects to the programs you actually work in.
What data should go in?
With all three, you can decide whether your chats are used to train the models. This is what the providers' help pages say:
| Tool | Individual account | Business plans |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” (Settings, Data controls) | According to OpenAI, no training by default |
| Claude | Turn off “Help Improve our AI models” (Settings, Privacy) | According to Anthropic, no training by default |
| Gemini | Turn off “Keep Activity”. Chats are then still stored for 72 hours. | According to Google, no training without prior permission (Google Workspace) |
Heads-up on feedback: If you give feedback, for example with thumbs up or down, all three providers say your chats may be used for training, even if you have training switched off otherwise. With ChatGPT and Claude, that means the whole conversation. With Gemini, Google also includes the last 24 hours of your chats.
Do you work alone or on a team?
All three offer separate team plans with shared administration. If you work alone, an individual subscription is usually enough.
What's your budget?
Prices and plans change often, so I don't list any here. Check with the provider before you subscribe.
How I approach it
In the intro call, I listen to which tasks keep repeating in your work. Then we look for the right path together, and only then for the tool. Sometimes the result is an automation with no AI at all. That is a good result too.

Frequently asked questions
For most tasks, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini differ very little. They keep taking turns at the top. What decides it is your tasks, the tools you already work in, and what may happen to your data.
That depends on your task, not on the name. For writing, summaries and ideas, both give you usable results. The difference usually comes from your instructions.
You can control this in all three: in ChatGPT with “Improve the model for everyone”, in Claude with “Help Improve our AI models”, in Gemini with “Keep Activity”. On business plans, training is off by default, according to the providers. If you give feedback, for example with thumbs up or down, all three say your chats may still be used for training.
Often not. If the same thing happens every time, an automation with a tool like n8n is enough. AI pays off where something has to be understood or written.
A tool for automating workflows between different apps, similar to Make or Zapier.
