The short answer

  • Chat answers in the conversation. It can also run scheduled actions, such as a daily news digest, which Gemini prepares in the hour before delivery.
  • Task is for goals with several steps. Gemini plans the steps, uses connected apps, a browser and files. According to Google, it is designed to ask you to confirm before it sends messages, buys something or submits a form.
  • Task needs Google AI Pro or Ultra and a personal Google Account. As of October 24, 2026, Google lists the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as regions where it is not available.

Chat vs Task at a glance

According to Google's help pages for tasks and schedules, as of October 24, 2026:

Creating tasks in Gemini

This is how Google describes it on gemini.google.com: click “Task” below the text box, describe your goal in the text box and, if you like, say when the task should run. Type @ to pick a saved skill; under “Upload & tools” you add files from your computer or Google Drive. While the task is running, you can give further instructions without losing progress.

Google's own examples: clean up your inbox by summarizing or archiving newsletters and unsubscribing from lists, watch flight and hotel prices and alert you when they drop within your budget, and research a topic with cited sources and package the result as a PDF, document, spreadsheet or presentation.

To work on websites, Gemini uses your local Chrome on a desktop or a remote browser in the cloud. Google says it is designed to ask you to confirm before it sends messages, changes or deletes your data, makes purchases or submits forms. When it reaches a sign-in page, it asks you to confirm “Sign in with Google” or to sign in yourself.

Scheduled and recurring tasks

Both can run on a schedule, but in different ways. Google points out explicitly that schedules in tasks are different from schedules in chats.

  • Schedules in a task start at a set time or in response to an event. Google's examples: “Every day at 8AM, give me an update on AI news” and “When my flight is delayed, notify me and propose an update to my itinerary”. If 15 tasks are already running, a schedule does not start.
  • Schedules in a chat are for daily, weekly or monthly routines, such as a news digest. Up to 10 can be active at a time. Because Gemini prepares the response within the hour before delivery, rapidly changing data like stock prices won't be the latest.

In the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland and the UK this means: recurring tasks in Task mode are not available for now. Google does not exclude these regions for schedules in chat and is gradually making them available to personal Google Accounts.

Where did Spark go?

Spark is the old name. According to Google, Spark ran as a beta for subscribers from May. Google renamed it Task because “tasks” was the word people kept using. Existing tasks and schedules are still in the sidebar.

Before you hand over your inbox

Google calls the feature experimental and names the risks itself. Hidden instructions in a website, email or document can mislead the agent (prompt injection). Gemini can also share information from your chats and connected apps with websites it visits.

Google's advice: don't enter passwords or payment details in the task thread, avoid scheduling tasks you find sensitive, and supervise the important ones.

Frequently asked questions

No. According to Google, Task needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription. If you cancel or downgrade, tasks already running finish and schedules pause; nothing is deleted.

As of October 24, 2026, no. Google lists the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as regions where tasks are not available.

Yes. Scheduled actions in a chat cover routines such as a daily news digest; up to 10 can be active at a time. Google points out that schedules in tasks work differently from schedules in chats.

Google's own summary: the task is the goal (what), the schedule says when it runs, and a skill is a set of reusable instructions that tells Gemini how to do it.
